GUARDIANS OF THE WILD HORSES
Release Date: 2025
Role: Producer
Przewalski’s horses, also known as takhi, are the last truly wild horses and are native to the steppes of Central Asia, particularly Mongolia.
Named after the Russian explorer Nikolai Przewalski, who first described them in the late 19th century, these horses have a rich history intertwined with Mongolia's cultural heritage.
This documentary delves into the rich history of Fernhill Estate, a historic property in the Mulgoa Valley, and its connection to the endangered Przewalski’s horses.
Once a grand residence with a storied equestrian legacy, Fernhill Estate became home to a collection of exotic animals under the ownership of Warren Anderson. As the estate changes direction, the fate of the Przewalski’s horses hangs in the balance.
Witness the extraordinary journey of the abandoned wild horses as they find a new sanctuary at ZAMBI Wildlife Retreat.

Creative Process
Embarking on a documentary project involves a journey of discovery, creativity, and overcoming challenges. Here’s a detailed look at how I approach the documentary-making process:
-
The journey begins with a compelling idea. I collaborate with stakeholders to define the documentary’s theme, message, and objectives. In-depth research follows, uncovering stories and perspectives that will shape the narrative.
-
Creating a storyboard helps to visualise the documentary’s flow. This blueprint includes key scenes, transitions, and interview segments, ensuring a cohesive and engaging storyline.
-
This phase involves thorough planning. I scout locations, secure necessary permits, and schedule interviews with key subjects. Overcoming hurdles such as location accessibility and subject availability often requires creative problem-solving and flexibility.
-
Capturing raw footage is both an art and a challenge. I use a mix of wide shots for context and close-ups for emotional impact. Filming in unpredictable environments and with real people means adapting to unforeseen circumstances, from weather changes to technical issues.
-
Interviews are at the heart of any documentary. I build rapport with interviewees to ensure they are comfortable, resulting in authentic and powerful storytelling. Technical challenges, like audio issues, are addressed swiftly to maintain quality.
-
B-roll footage enriches the narrative, providing visual context and depth. This involves filming supplementary scenes, landscapes, and activities that support the main story. Flexibility and patience are key, especially when capturing spontaneous moments.
-
In post-production, the story truly takes shape. I meticulously edit the footage, weaving together interviews and b-roll to create a seamless narrative. Overcoming challenges such as incomplete footage or technical glitches requires creative solutions and attention to detail.
-
Enhancing the documentary with sound design and colour grading adds layers of emotion and professionalism. Clear audio and visually consistent scenes are crucial for viewer engagement.
-
Collaboration continues as I share drafts with stakeholders for feedback. Addressing constructive criticism and making necessary adjustments ensures the documentary meets the vision and expectations.
-
Final touches, such as refining transitions and ensuring the documentary flows smoothly, are applied. The completed documentary is then delivered in the desired format, ready for distribution.
-
Throughout the process, challenges are inevitable. Whether it’s logistical issues, technical difficulties, or unexpected obstacles, I approach each with resilience and creativity. Problem-solving is an integral part of the journey, ensuring that the final product is both impactful and true to the vision.
Through this comprehensive and adaptive process, I create documentaries that not only tell powerful stories but also resonate deeply with audiences. Each project is an opportunity to explore, learn, and overcome, resulting in a finished piece that is both authentic and compelling.
